Karabakh and Cyprus

On April 9th, 2008 Peacebuilding and conflict transformation resource center at CSI organized a discussion about Karabakh and Cyprus conflicts. At first a YSU MA student Erik Grigoryan presented his own thesis "Mediation in contemporary protracted conflicts: Karabakh and Cyprus conflicts, a comparative". He presented the history of conflicts, the results and consequences of mediations for transformation and resolving conflicts. He told also about current situation and perspectives of conflict transformation. The participants discussed the role of The Minsk group, the plans suggested for negotiations, and the superstates’ interests concerning the region, and international developments in general. However the main discussion was about transformation of the Karabakh conflict. It was mentioned that Azerbaijan is very active in the informational sphere and that it is very important to observe the situation from different aspects, to learn the arguments of opposite side and present the Armenian position more proactively.
