Violence against Photojournalist

Photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan was today subjected to violence while photographing prosecutors arriving at the Prosecutors' Board Session. He did not apply to doctors and is not going to. He says he has intense earache and headache after the brawl.

A 30-year-old man forbade him to take pictures.

"He started to swear, I told him to stop, but he didn't. I told him: "You are what you tell me". He took my camera and hit me with it in my face. I hardly managed to take back the camera and hide it in my bosom for safety," Shamshyan said.

The brawl continued for 10-15 minutes. Gagik told about the incident at the press conference held by Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan after the session mentioning that he managed to take the picture of the attacker who entered the building of the General Procuracy.

"I am surprised that he attacked me," Gagik says. "First I told him I was a reporter. Besides even prosecutors were joking saying that I know when to take pictures." According to Shamshyan there are also video recordings of the brawl recorded by the cameras above the procuracy entrance.

Prosecutor General responded to the incidence saying that he "literally demands that Gagik present them a written report. And he as a Prosecutor General demands to present also the video materials and the recording so that they can investigate the case."

Shamshyan said he would pass his pictures to the procuracy, the recording are already there, He said he did not know the assailant but had several times seen him at the March 1 trials. He also said that he believed the prosecutor's word that they would follow the case.
